Dear Friends:
We are pleased to present to you our new website and hope you find it an engaging, interactive experience. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
We are approaching the end of the first year of our LIVE UNITED movement. It’s a new business model for United Way—a goal-driven, action-packed, results-oriented agenda that works to advance the common good by creating opportunities for everyone to have a better life. Underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do, we are all people. Connected, interdependent, United. When you reach out a hand to one—you are influencing the condition of all. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.
And unite we must. For thousands of Camden County residents, the basic ingredients for a good life are increasingly beyond reach. New Jersey is the second wealthiest state in America, but Camden City—our county seat—has been dubbed both the poorest and most dangerous city in the nation.
At United Way—we simply will not accept these conditions. Not in our backyard. We believe the building blocks for a good life are: education, income and health. Everyone needs a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family and good health. Our goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems.
And the problems are serious. One in 5 of our county’s children are living in poverty. Twenty percent of our high school students did not graduate in 2007. Ten percent of residents do not have health insurance, and many more are not receiving the basic services they need to maintain good health.
We’re working to improve those statistics. Annually, United Way of Camden County delivers over $5 million dollars to area non-profits. Many dedicated donors and volunteers worked to give and invest those dollars behind the most pressing community needs. We partnered with all facets of our community to understand our region’s greatest challenges and develop the best strategies for change. By giving, advocating and volunteering—our partners are true examples of what it means to LIVE UNITED.
Partnership is a critical element to our success. Our work requires collaboration across all sectors—big business, small business, elected officials, state agencies, nonprofits, academia, the labor movement, the media and private citizens. Working together, we can accomplish things that no organization could accomplish alone.
Please remember to tell us how you are LIVING UNITED under the Our Movement section our website. We really want to know.
